Centres for Research based Innovation (CRI)- The Research Council of Norway


  • The CRI scheme is intended to promote innovation by supporting long-term research by forging close alliances between research-intensive enterprises and prominent research groups. CRIs are to develop competence that maintains high international standard in fields of importance for innovation and value creation.
  • The scheme is designed to enhance technology transfer, internationalisation and researcher training.
  • The scheme will be based on co-financing provided by enterprises, host institutions and the Research Council. Enterprises must participate actively in a centre's governance, funding and research. The centres will be established for a maximum of five plus three years.
  • The main criterion for selecting centres will be their potential for innovation and value creation. The scientific quality of the research must be of a high international standard.


Objectives
The CRI scheme will:

  • Encourage enterprises to innovate by placing stronger emphasis on long-term research and by making it attractive for enterprises that work on the international arena to establish R&D activities inNorway.
  • Facilitate active alliances between innovative enterprises and prominent research groups.
  • Promote the development of industrially oriented research groups that are on the cutting edge of international research and are part of strong international networks.
  • Stimulate researcher training in fields of importance to the business community, and encourage the transfer of research-based knowledge and technology.

Applicants and partners
The host institution for a centre can be a university, a university college or a research institute, or an enterprise with a strong research activity. The host institution should have a strong reputation within the disciplines or industrial areas the centre addresses. The host institution's administration must make a declaration of intent stating that it will undertake the obligations entailed by hosting, and explain how the CRI's research will fit into the host institution's research strategy.
