Excellence Programmes (DGTRE)

Since 2004 the Walloon Region has been co-financing several excellence programmes whose the objectives are to cover research and innovation as a whole, from fundamental research to industrial applications and to give research centres the means to develop their research results and to increase their international reputation. Each excellence programme is supported financially during 5 years at 50% by the Walloon Region on the one side and at 50% by universities and the private sector on the other side. For instance, the Institute for Medical Immunology received in 2004 a 5 year grant of 12.5 millions EUR. The same amount is supported by Glaxo Smithkline Biologicals and the Free University of Brussels (ULB).

The identification of the laboratories that can benefit of this measure is taken in collaboration with the academic authorities. Potential new excellence programmes are currently being identified and might be supported in 2007.
